The days are getting longer and summer in New England is just around the corner!

Though our summers are short, we like to squeeze every last drop of the warm, sunny weather out of them. Part of prepping for a successful and enjoyable summer is doing the necessary home maintenance.

Here’s a checklist to help you prepare for an great summer in your home.

Summer Home Maintenance Tasks

Check Your Detectors and Alarms

Hopefully you are already doing this regularly, but if you haven’t had the chance, test your devices to make sure they are functioning properly. Then rest easy knowing that your family is safe when at home.

Let the Light Shine In

One of the best parts of summer is the abundant sunshine– especially after a cold, dreary winter. To enjoy the sunlight to its fullest, be sure to clean the interior and exterior of your windows. Clean dirty screens and replace those that are showing rips, snags, or holes to take advantage of the breeze without the bugs.

Keep Your Home Cool

When the temperature outside starts heating up, your air conditioner kicks into high gear. To stay cool and comfortable (and avoid unwanted surprises), show your AC unit some love by doing the following:

  • Check/replace the filter as needed to ensure proper air flow.
  • Check the outdoor unit to make sure the condenser coils are free of debris. Clear vegetation around the unit.
  • Have a professional HVAC company come in and perform annual maintenance.

Clean Your Exterior

If you don’t plan on painting or replacing your siding this summer, a good power washing will help your home look its best. You can do it yourself easily or hire someone to do it for you. If you are doing it yourself, use the proper safety precautions and avoid using too much pressure so you don’t damage your siding.

Go With the (Reverse) Flow

Do your ceiling fans reverse direction? If so, make sure they spin counterclockwise in the warmer months. This will push the air downward and help cool your home more efficiently when the weather is hot.

Clean Out Your Gutters

Winter runoff and spring rains can wash debris into your gutters and downspouts. Check them out and make sure your gutters are clear so water drains away from your house as it should. While you are up there, inspect your roof for loose shingles or other damage that might have occurred during the winter and spring months.

Check the Deck or Patio

Summer is perfect for spending time outside on the deck or patio enjoying the outdoors or entertaining. If you have a deck, inspect the boards for damage or rot. Remove loose paint and touch up as needed. Check for cracks in your patio and repair any cracks before they get larger. Give your deck or patio and furniture a good power washing so you are ready to enjoy the outdoors!
